Accommodations & Meals

Registration Costs will cover the conference, all lodging and meals, the field trip, and transportation to/from Flatrock from the vicinity of CLT Airport. Because of our contractual obligations with the vendors conference costs cannot be adjusted for non-leader participants who choose to stay off-site or drive themselves.

Participants will not need vehicles during the conference. All activities will be within a small 'campus' and golf cart service will be available if guests have mobility limitations.

Accommodations will be double-occupancy (single occupancy available first-come-first-serve with payment and registration for extra cost) hotel-like cabins and rooms throughout the Highlands Lake Inn and Resort in several buildings. All double occupancy rooms will have 2 beds. You will be given the opportunity to provide a room-mate preference.  PRF2022 will have almost full-residency of the property.

Highlands Lake is located in the Appalachian Mountains on the outskirts of scenic Flatrock, NC on the edge of the Blueridge escarpment, with average June temperatures of 82F (28C) high and 60F (15C) low. Summer showers are common.

Swimming (Lake & Pool), paddle boarding and walking trails will all be open to guests.

For sleeping, we will make every effort to pair you with a person of your choosing.

All meals and snacks will be included. However, we plan to stop at a grocery store prior to checking in for the week so that attendees may make additional food and drink purchases if they desire.

If you have special needs for accommodations or meals, you will be able to indicate that during the registration process.

ACCESSIBILITY - Here is a map of the Highland Lake Resort. Most events will be in the "Grand Ole Hall" with lodging in Woodward House and HI INN Lodge. A golf-cart will be made available to guests for transportation around the facilities. We will do our best to accommodate any need, but would be appreciative if you could inform us of your requirements as soon as you are aware of them in order for us best to accommodate you.

NOTE FOR FAMILIES - Because a primary goal of Penrose Conferences - in general - is to maximize interactions between scientists in a close setting, GSA discourages families from participating in Penrose events and meals. However, we recognize that some attendees, particularly those traveling internationally, may need or desire to have family with them.

There will be a public restaurant on site for guests, and a possibility for housing for guests. We will provide a meal-only option if guests would like to eat with the conference attendees. If you require special needs for your family, please contact us.
